Pete Goss sets Oz departure date
Pete Goss, whose latest project is a voyage to Australia in a Cornish lugger, has set the departure date for 22 October. They will set sail from Newlyn, whence the original Mystery, the inspiration for the voyage, set out in 1854.
Pete will be sailing his newly-built lugger, the 37ft Spirit of Mystery, with members of his family, including 14-year-old son Eliot, as crew. The original Mystery, also a Mount's Bay lugger of 37ft was crewed by seven Cornishmen, all related, who went to seek their fortunes in the Gold Rush. They departed at about the same time of the year, after waiting for a favourable northerly wind - as Pete plans to do - and completed the voyage in 116 days.
Spirit of Mystery recently spent a couple of weeks at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth, where she was visited by 1800 schoolchildren.
An interview with Pete Goss will appear in the November Classic Boat, on sale 16 October.
